Nigeria’s Head Coach, Eric Chelle, has declared that his team is fully prepared to retain the Unity Cup trophy in Saturday’s final in London, regardless of how the match unfolds.
The Super Eagles and Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz booked their places in the final after recording identical 2-0 victories over Zimbabwe and India respectively in the semi-finals.
The clash marks the third meeting between the two sides in the history of the Afro-Caribbean tournament, which celebrates football, music, and culture in the British capital.
In last year’s edition, Moses Simon gave Nigeria an early lead before Kaheim Dixon quickly restored parity for Jamaica. Samuel Chukwueze put the Super Eagles back in front shortly after the restart at Brentford Stadium, but Jon Russell equalised once again for the Reggae Boyz.
The thrilling encounter eventually went to penalties, where the three-time African champions converted all five of their spot-kicks, while Jamaica’s Dwayne Atkinson sent his effort over the bar, handing Nigeria the title.
When asked whether his team was prepared for another penalty shootout, Chelle stressed that his focus remains on victory by any means.
“Penalties are part of the game, and they can decide who wins a match. Every time I go into a game, I have the mentality to win,” Chelle said.
“This is the culture I have instilled in these players—a winning culture. I don’t know if Saturday’s game will be decided by penalties, but what I do know is that I have prepared my team to win. These are very young players with bright futures, and they are hungry for success at every level. On Saturday, we will see how the game is decided, but we have prepared to win and defend the Unity Cup”, said Chelle.
