Ondo Govt Approves ₦75bn Water Project to Boost Public Health, Sanitation

The Ondo State Government has approved a ₦75 billion water project aimed at providing safe and potable water to residents of Akure and other local government areas within the Central Senatorial District.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Hon. Ayodele Akande, disclosed this while speaking on Fresh 102.9 FM, Akure. He said the initiative reflects Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s OUR EASE agenda, which underscores the administration’s commitment to public health, environmental sanitation, and sustainable infrastructure.
Akande noted that access to clean water and a hygienic environment remains essential to healthy living, adding that the government is determined to improve water accessibility across the state.
He revealed that the ₦75 billion initiative includes the rehabilitation of the long-abandoned Owena Multi-Purpose Dam, which will serve as a major source of potable water, irrigation, and power supply for residents of Ondo State.
In addition, the project will involve the installation of solar-powered boreholes in strategic communities across the state, including Akure, Ose, Ikare Akoko, Ilaje, Oke-Igbo, and Ondo West Local Government Areas.
The commissioner also announced plans to distribute water testing kits to households across the three senatorial districts to promote water quality monitoring and raise public awareness on water safety.
Furthermore, Akande said the state government has approved the construction of modern toilet facilities in selected public schools to promote hygiene and eliminate open defecation.
He appealed to residents to support and cooperate with the government in its efforts to ensure a sustainable water supply system and maintain a clean, healthy environment.
According to him, the project will significantly improve access to potable water, reduce water-borne diseases, and enhance socio-economic development across the state.
