As a way of developing youth and promoting sports in Ondo state, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has officially flagged off the O’Datiwa U-17 Football Competition, a local tournament designed to harness young football talents across the 18 local government areas of the state.
Announcing the starting of the competition, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Segun Omoyofunmi, said the initiative represents the governor’s sustaining gift to the youth, a programme aimed at unlocking talent, nurturing discipline, and fostering unity through sports.
According to him, a total of 36 teams drawn from all 18 local government areas will compete in 79 matches, showcasing colour, culture, and excellence across the state.
He expressed optimism that “the next global football icon could rise from right here in Ondo State.”
Omoyofunmi noted that the O’Datiwa U-17 competition is not just a sporting event, but a platform for empowerment and social transformation, aligning with the administration’s vision to engage youth productively and strengthen community bonds through sports.
He added, “This is just the beginning, let’s give our youth the stage they deserve and keep the flame of O’Datiwa burning bright.”
The Commissioner appreciated the unending support of stakeholders including the ALGON Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Fasua, the Ondo State Football Association (FA), the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), referees, the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), and the dedicated team in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
