Manchester United secured their biggest Champions League win since 2020 by sweeping aside Sabah FK at Old Trafford.
The Azerbaijan champions had reached the league phase for the first time after four qualifying rounds, but United exposed the gulf in class, leading 3-0 at half-time through Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko, making his first start since 3 May, provided the focal point United had lacked in their opening Premier League games. His display could earn him a start against Manchester City, leaving Michael Carrick to choose between Cunha and Marcus Rashford on the left.
With the Manchester derby only three days away, Carrick will have been pleased to settle the game early. United needed the win after taking just four points from their first three league matches.
Facing Atletico Madrid, Como, Sporting Lisbon, Roma and Bayern Munich next, United could not have asked for a better Champions League start. Sitting behind Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, their return to the competition looks highly promising.
