The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has described radio as a trusted medium of communication capable of reaching homes, markets, institutions and communities across society.
Oba Owoade made the remarks on Saturday during the commissioning of Oyomesi 97.5FM in Oyo town, stressing that such a platform carries a high level of public trust and must be managed with professionalism and responsibility.
He recalled that the station was initially launched as Abobade Radio Station on the day of his coronation as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, noting that the launch symbolised continuity, identity and service, while its formal commissioning represents growth and readiness to serve the public.
The monarch explained the historical significance of the name Oyomesi, describing it as a symbol of wisdom, counsel, order and responsibility in governance, and urged that the station’s operations should continue to reflect these enduring values of the Oyo people.
Oba Owoade reaffirmed the palace’s commitment to the development of Oyo Kingdom, highlighting initiatives in information and communication technology, healthcare improvement and education aimed at enhancing citizens’ welfare and equipping young people with skills for the future.
He praised the proprietor and chairman of the station, Barrister Wakil Oyedemi, describing him as a committed Oyo indigene devoted to uplifting the less privileged. According to the monarch, Oyedemi’s efforts in establishing the station demonstrated discipline, resilience and clarity of purpose.
The Alaafin also commended the station’s management and staff for their contributions to community development, urging them to uphold ethical standards, accuracy and fairness in all broadcasts.
He concluded by blessing Oyomesi 97.5FM, saying: “May it grow in strength, relevance and service to humanity, contributing positively to unity, peace and development within Oyo State and beyond.”
