The Edo State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Etin-Osa Ogbeiwi, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to modernizing and upgrading science education in secondary schools across the state’s three senatorial districts.
He also assured the Edo State chapter of the Association of Science Laboratory Technology Professionals of Nigeria (ASLTPON) of the government’s dedication to strengthening scientific research and innovation in the state.
Ogbeiwi gave the assurance while hosting ASLTPON delegates at the Ministry’s conference room in Benin City. He noted that the Ministry’s core mandate is to drive innovation, scientific advancement, and technological development. He further pledged support for enforcing proper laboratory standards to eliminate quackery and ensure that all science-related establishments operate in line with national and global best practices. According to him, partnering with certified laboratory professionals will significantly enhance data quality, research output, and scientific operations across Edo State.
In his remarks, the Commissioner emphasized that science and technology are multidimensional tools essential for sustainable development. He stressed the need to deepen Edo State’s policy frameworks to create an enabling environment where innovation can thrive.
Ogbeiwi highlighted the importance of building strong scientific structures that support modern research and technological growth, adding that the South-South region must continue to adopt coordinated strategies to advance science and technology. He noted that updated approaches to scientific practice will remain pivotal as the state expands its technological ecosystem.
The ASLTPON delegation, led by its Chairman, Comrade Osagie Kingsley, congratulated the Commissioner on his appointment and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to professionalism, ethics, and safety in laboratory practice. The group also underscored the strategic role of laboratory scientists and technologists in research, healthcare, industry, and technological development.
Comrade Osagie proposed key areas of collaboration, including training and capacity-building for laboratory professionals, research partnerships, strengthening STEM education, and enforcing proper certification for laboratory operators, chemical and equipment dealers, and other science-related enterprises. He also called for the creation of a joint committee between the Ministry and ASLTPON, as well as a state task force to monitor the implementation of the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy.
He expressed confidence that such collaboration would accelerate technological growth, improve scientific output, and boost Edo State’s internally generated revenue.
