Somolu LG Moves To Block Revenue Leakages, Strengthen Collections For 2026 Agenda

The Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Lateef Ashimi, has appealed to rate payers to settle their outstanding levies before enforcement teams begin compliance visits.

Ashimi made the appeal during the council’s 2026 Budget Retreat, stressing that improved revenue collection is essential for delivering on his administration’s promises to residents.

“I have no doubt that the only way we can fulfill our campaign promises is to ensure that all collectable revenues from rate payers are remitted,” he said.

He noted that while many local governments struggle to collect rates, both the Federal and State Governments continue to strengthen their internal revenue systems. “I cannot imagine a situation where the Federal Government treats revenue with levity. Without consistent remittances into the Federation Account, the entire government structure would collapse,” he said.

Ashimi acknowledged the financial challenges faced by residents but emphasized the need for everyone to perform their civic responsibilities. According to him, residents desire good roads, a conducive learning environment, drainage systems, functional primary healthcare centres, and other social amenities, all of which require adequate funding.

Describing the retreat as an eye-opener, the Chairman said it broadened his understanding of the dos and don’ts of revenue generation at the local government level. He urged officials to work diligently to block leakages so that the revenue generated can serve the wider community rather than benefit a few individuals.

The Head of Budget, Planning and Statistics, Mr. Femi Giwa, encouraged revenue collectors to make full use of the data generated by his department to improve efficiency and accountability.
