Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has cost its players recognition, with none making the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist.
Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman were absent despite strong club seasons and starring roles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Osimhen recorded 30 goal contributions in 2025/26, while Lookman had 12 goals and six assists.
Their omission ends Nigeria’s three-year run of Ballon d’Or representation. Osimhen finished eighth in 2023 after winning Serie A with Napoli, while Lookman placed 14th in 2024 after helping Atalanta win the Europa League.
Nigeria also earned recognition in the women’s categories, with Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie finishing fourth in their respective awards after Nigeria won a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
The 2026 shortlist is led by Paris Saint-Germain, with 10 nominees. Sadio Mane’s inclusion means Africa is represented, but Nigeria is absent for the first time since Osimhen’s breakthrough.
The ceremony will take place on October 26 in London.
