Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured residents that his administration will intensify efforts to strengthen the state’s security architecture to ensure that all parts of Oyo State remain safe and secure.
The governor gave the assurance on Thursday during the grand finale and laying of wreaths to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
Makinde expressed appreciation to officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for their commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state. He urged them to remain steadfast in the discharge of their duties despite the prevailing security challenges confronting the country.
Commending the relative peace currently enjoyed in Oyo State, the governor said his administration would continue to support security operatives to enable them perform effectively. He stressed that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority of his government and would continue to receive sustained attention.
The governor disclosed that the state government plans to establish a welfare scheme for the families of the five forest guards recently killed at the Oloka Village axis of the Old Oyo National Park in Oriire Local Government Area, assuring that the affected families would be adequately catered for.
Makinde also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting wounded soldiers, widows, orphans and other dependants of fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation. He described the current period as challenging for Nigeria, noting that security personnel have continued to give their best despite limited resources.
“For us as a government, we will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure that Oyo State is not a hardship posting for security operatives,” the governor said, adding that his administration would leave no stone unturned until every part of the state is safe and secure.
Also speaking at the event, the Interim Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Oyo State Command, Chief Julius Alabi, commended the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government for improvements in the welfare of legion members and other forms of support.
The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths by Governor Makinde and other dignitaries, including representatives of the Oyo State House of Assembly, the judiciary, traditional institutions and security agencies. It also included a 21-gun salute, special prayers for fallen heroes, the release of ceremonial pigeons, parade inspections, and was attended by top government officials, legionnaires, widows of fallen heroes and their families.
