The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate the poor performance of the country’s national teams in international competitions, with particular focus on the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons, 10-time champions and holders of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the ongoing 14th edition of the competition in Morocco. They subsequently lost 2–1 to South Africa in the playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederation Playoffs scheduled for later this year.
The result means Nigeria, long regarded as the dominant force in African women’s football, will miss the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, having featured at every edition since the tournament began in 1991.
Former NFF General Secretary, Ambassador Fanny Amun (MON), will chair the committee. Other members are former Nigeria U-20 coach and President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Coach Ladan Bosso; former Super Falcons captain, multiple WAFCON winner and FIFA World Cup star, Desire Oparanozie; former Super Eagles captain, AFCON winner and FIFA World Cup star, Mutiu Adepoju; and former FIFA referee, Dr Alex Mana.
Chairman of the Sokoto State Football Association, Mallam Mohammed Nasiru Sa’idu, will serve as secretary of the committee.
The committee is expected to examine the factors responsible for the recent poor performances of Nigeria’s national teams and make recommendations to improve the country’s fortunes in international football.
