Egypt Edge Australia On Penalties To Reach World Cup Last 16

Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive penalty as Egypt beat Australia 4-2 on penalties after they finished level at 1-1 following extra time on Friday to reach the World Cup last 16.

The Pharaohs of Egypt became the second African team to qualify for the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties on Friday night
The Round of 32 fixtures decided at the Dallas Stadium, saw the Egyptians shot into the lead in the 13th minutes though Eman Ashour.
Australia leveled up in the 55th minutes when Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany turned the ball into his own net.
Evvirts by both sides to find the winner proved abortive till the end of the 90 minutes.
The 30 minutes extra time also refused to produce a winner, thus forcing the encounter into penalty shootout.
The Egyptians however laughed last, scoring four of their kicks while the Australians converted two, to earn the Africans a 4-2 win.
The game went to extra time after a second-half Mohamed Hany own goal cancelled out Emam Ashour’s early opener for Egypt.
Egypt will play either Argentina or Cape Verde in the next round.
