Colombia Sink Ghana, Set Up Switzerland Clash

Colombia secured a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana in a sweltering encounter in Kansas City on Friday night.
Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute as Colombia produced another commanding performance to book a last-16 clash with Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday.
Despite the narrow scoreline, Colombia dominated proceedings and could have won by a much bigger margin. The South Americans repeatedly threatened Ghana’s defence, while the Black Stars failed to register a single shot on target throughout the contest. Ghana’s best opportunity came inside the opening minute when Thomas Partey fired a long-range effort just inches wide of the post.
Both teams were forced into early changes during a frantic opening spell. Colombia lost striker Jhon Cordoba to a groin injury, with Luis Suarez replacing him, while Ghana’s Marvin Senaya was forced off with a hamstring injury and replaced by Alidu Seidu.
The breakthrough came when Suarez surged down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross for the unmarked Arias, who volleyed home at the far post after Seidu failed to track his run. Ghana gradually grew into the game, but Antoine Semenyo’s deflected effort over the bar summed up the Black Stars’ attacking struggles.
Colombia continued to create chances before halftime. Luis Diaz dragged a shot wide with only goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi to beat, while Suarez headed off target from Jefferson Lerma’s cross. Zigi also produced an excellent save in stoppage time to deny Johan Mojica’s powerful header.
After the break, Zigi remained busy, making another impressive save to keep out Gustavo Puerta before Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside after finishing from Lerma’s cross.
Partey came close to equalising midway through the second half but dragged his effort wide after Colombia failed to clear their lines. Colombia remained in control, with Juan Fernando Quintero narrowly missing from distance, Diaz seeing another effort deflected wide, and Davinson Sanchez denied by another fine save from Zigi. Ghana pushed for a late equaliser but failed to break down Colombia’s disciplined defence, crashing out of the tournament without scoring in the knockout match.
The defeat also means Ghana became the seventh of nine African teams eliminated in the Round of 32, leaving only Morocco and Egypt to carry the continent’s hopes in the tournament.
