… intensifies campaign for cleaner, safer Lagos
The Lagos State Government has reiterated that a cleaner, healthier and flood-resilient environment requires collective responsibility and behavioural change from all residents.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji, stated this at a Stakeholders’ Environmental Enlightenment Campaign in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, saying the initiative aims to promote responsible waste management across Lagos communities.
Represented by the Director of Environmental Assessment Department, Dr. Olasunkanmi Sojinu, Gaji said the campaign aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Lagos through public engagement and environmental advocacy.
Gaji identified indiscriminate waste disposal as a major environmental challenge, warning that dumping refuse on roads, medians and drainage channels contributes to flooding, health risks and environmental degradation.
He stressed that residents, businesses, community groups and other stakeholders all have roles to play, adding that the government would continue to promote compliance through education, dialogue and partnerships.
He urged Local Governments, LCDAs, traditional institutions, community groups, market associations, transport unions and residents to support environmental advocacy and responsible waste management.
Gaji advised residents to use approved PSP waste operators, keep drainage channels clear and report environmental violations through official channels.
The Chairman of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Prince Lanre Sanusi, said a clean environment improves investment, productivity and quality of life, urging residents to support sustainable environmental practices.
Participants at the campaign included community leaders, market associations, transport unions, traditional rulers, environmental stakeholders and residents.
