Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets and Flamingos will on Thursday, September 3, discover their opponents as the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B conducts the draws for its U-17 boys’ and girls’ competitions in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The draws, scheduled for the Stade du 04 August, will determine the group-stage pairings and pathways for the two Nigerian sides as they prepare for their respective regional campaigns.
The Golden Eaglets will learn their opponents in the WAFU B U-17 Boys’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifying competition, which provides a crucial platform for young players to gain international experience and compete for a place at the continental finals.
For the Flamingos, the draw will determine their path in the second edition of the WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup, with Nigeria among seven countries confirmed for the tournament.
The participating nations are Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, hosts Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Niger.
The groupings will be closely watched as they could determine the difficulty of Nigeria’s route through both competitions. The Flamingos will be hoping for a favourable draw as they seek to make an impact in the emerging regional women’s youth competition, while the Eaglets will target a strong start in their bid to qualify for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
Beyond the immediate quest for success, both tournaments will offer Nigeria an opportunity to assess and develop its next generation of football talent.
