Australia booked their place in the World Cup Round of 32, while Paraguay moved close to qualification after a goalless draw in San Francisco.
The point was enough for Australia to finish second in the group, while Paraguay’s four points leave them well placed to advance as one of the best third-placed teams. The result did little to quiet criticism of the expanded format, with both sides appearing content to settle for a draw.
Australia will face the runners-up from the group containing Egypt, Iran and Belgium on Friday, 3 July. Paraguay are on course to meet Group E winners Germany.
Australia started brighter in a subdued first half, with Jackson Irvine and Cristian Volpato both denied by goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Paraguay, without suspended captain Miguel Almiron, offered little before the break.
The South Americans improved after halftime, but both sides still struggled for clear chances. Paraguay lost Diego Gomez to suspension for the next round and defender Omar Alderete to injury, while late efforts from Jordan Bos and Mauricio failed to break the deadlock.
