Egypt secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup win on Monday, coming from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 in Group G at BC Place. Inspired by captain Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs produced a strong second-half comeback to move top of the group and boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
New Zealand took the lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman headed home from Tim Payne’s cross. Egypt grew into the game but went into halftime trailing 1-0.
After the break, Egypt responded. Mostafa Ziko equalised in the 59th minute with a header from Mohamed Hany’s cross, before Salah completed the turnaround in the 68th minute after being set up by Ziko.
New Zealand pushed for a response, but Egypt sealed the win in the 82nd minute when Trezeguet headed in Salah’s corner.
The historic victory sends Egypt to the top of Group G ahead of their final group-stage match against Iran.
