Sanwo-Olu Donates ₦100m, Houses, Vehicles To Nigerian Legion For 2026 Remembrance Day
As part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has donated ₦100 million, four two-bedroom apartments located in Ajara, and two pickup utility vehicles to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion.
The governor also donated four cows, 500 bags of rice, and other food items to members of the Nigerian Legion, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of ex-servicemen and the families of fallen heroes.
Sanwo-Olu announced the donations on Monday during the State Executive Council meeting, which coincided with the Appeal Fund and launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem at Lagos House, Ikeja.
He said the launch of the Emblem Appeal ahead of the January 15, 2026 commemoration has become a longstanding national tradition, noting that remembering fallen heroes is both a constitutional and moral obligation.
“It is customary to accede to the yearly requests of the Nigerian Legion. We will continue to support the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion in demonstrating our gratitude for the services rendered to preserve the sovereignty of Nigeria,” the governor said.
“Our sovereignty as a nation exists because of these brave men and women. The Emblem Appeal is a responsibility we owe to those who laid down their lives for Nigeria and to those who returned with life-changing injuries. We must remember them in real and tangible ways. This is our way of saying thank you for the sacrifices that allow all of us to live in a free and united country,” he added.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion, Mr Akeem Wolimoh, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and the state government for their consistent support over the years, describing Lagos as one of the most supportive states to the Legion nationwide.
He said the assistance received has significantly improved the living conditions of Legion members, noting that some dependants have benefited from skill acquisition programmes facilitated by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as empowerment initiatives from other state ministries, departments and agencies.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Mr Bode Agoro; Chief of Staff, Mr Tayo Ayinde; members of the State Executive Council; and officials of the Nigerian Legion.
