Environmental Bees Club: Lagos Unveils New Push for Student-Led Climate Solutions
As global challenges such as climate change, waste management, and environmental degradation continue to intensify, the Lagos State Government has emphasized that sustainable solutions must begin with awareness and personal responsibility.
Speaking at the 2025 Environmental Bees Club (EBC) Members and Handlers Sensitisation Programme held in Alausa, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Tajudeen Gaji, said the sensitisation effort should serve as a call to action rather than merely a learning exercise.
Dr. Gaji, represented by the Director of the Environmental Education Unit, Mrs. Monsurat Banire, explained that the programme goes beyond sharing information, noting that it is aimed at reorienting participants and inspiring practical action.
He stated that the EBC initiative reflects the state government’s recognition of young people as key agents of change, hence the need to engage students in hands-on environmental projects and educational activities that encourage critical thinking, responsible conduct, and advocacy for sustainability within their schools and communities.
The Permanent Secretary added that the introduction of the Eco-Winner Sustainability Tour has brought a healthy competitive edge to the programme, rewarding excellence and innovation among students who exhibit strong environmental commitment.
Dr. Gaji further stressed that the success of environmental initiatives depends on collective responsibility—students, teachers, parents, and communities—whose support is essential to building a resilient and sustainable Lagos.
He reaffirmed the current administration’s dedication to implementing policies and programmes that promote environmental sustainability, including waste management reforms, green infrastructure development, renewable energy initiatives, and public awareness campaigns.
Dr. Gaji also commended the dedication of EBC teachers for their unwavering support and mentorship, describing them as the vital link between policy and practice and instrumental in translating environmental education into tangible community impact.
