The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said no amount of defections can save the All Progressives Congress (APC) from defeat in 2027, faulting the party over claims that key figures from the opposition party are set to defect to the APC.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the claim made by the APC National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, at a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, as a desperate move by the party to seek validation.
Abdullahi said the declaration exposed the APC’s insecurity and desperation for political survival, despite already boasting of governors and senators across the country.
“This statement underscores a deep realisation by the ruling party that it cannot be saved, even if all the governors in Nigeria defected to it,” the ADC spokesman said. “That is why, despite all their bragging, they are still desperate for ADC members.”
He accused the APC of destroying the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians since coming to power.
Abdullahi further described the wave of recent defections to the ruling party as a “gang-up against the people” by political elites driven by self-preservation.
“We wonder if the APC has run out of governors to seduce that it now resorts to shadowy references to unnamed ADC members. If these individuals are so ‘key’, let the chairman of the hated party mention their names,” he stated.
The ADC likened the APC’s alleged recruitment tactics to what it called the “ruinous game” once played by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during its years in power, warning that the ruling party would eventually learn that “real democratic power lies with the people, not a few power merchants.”
