As part of efforts to improve the welfare of teaching and non-teaching staff, the Lagos State Government has approved car refurbishment and housing loans for 265 beneficiaries through the Teachers’ Loan Board.
TESCOM in a post on its Facebook page disclosed that the approvals were granted at the bi-annual Teachers’ Loan Board meeting, presided over by the Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, at the Commission’s headquarters in Ikeja.
Speaking at the meeting, Oyekan-Ismaila reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the welfare of teachers and non-teaching staff, noting that such support is essential to retaining talented educators and fostering dedication to their vital role in society.
She explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had approved an upward review of the car refurbishment loan from ₦100,000 to ₦500,000 for senior-level management officers, and from ₦30,000 to ₦100,000 for junior-level officers, thereby enabling more staff to benefit from the scheme.
Oyekan-Ismaila also disclosed that the recommendation by the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) for an upward review of housing loans is currently receiving the Governor’s attention. She urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the loans and positively impact student outcomes in the state.
Also speaking, the Director of the Teachers’ Welfare Department, Mr. Akinwande Festus, stressed that adequate welfare packages boost teachers’ job satisfaction, motivation, and morale. According to him, the loans improve the standard of living for teaching and non-teaching staff, encourage talented educators to remain in the system, and prevent the loss of experienced personnel.
The Teachers’ Loan Board is responsible for considering housing and car refurbishment loan applications from teaching and non-teaching staff across all Education Districts, LASTVEB, and TESCOM. Approved loans are subsequently disbursed to eligible staff through the State Treasury Office, Alausa.
