Lagos Tackles Housing Crisis With 10,623 Homes

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said his administration delivered 10,623 housing units in seven years, even as the government acknowledged that the state’s housing deficit remains above 3.3 million units.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, disclosed this at the 2026 World Habitat Day celebration in Ikeja, themed “Adequate Housing for All.”

He said the completed homes comprised 4,414 units funded directly by the government and 6,209 delivered through public-private partnerships across 23 housing estates in the state’s five divisions.

The governor said the government was expanding access to homeownership through initiatives such as the Rent-to-Own scheme, which allows eligible first-time buyers to take possession of homes with a five per cent deposit and pay the balance over 10 years.

He stressed that adequate housing goes beyond providing buildings to ensuring affordability, security and access to essential infrastructure, including roads, drainage, electricity and water supply.

Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that five ongoing housing schemes were expected to deliver an additional 1,584 housing units.

On tenancy issues, he said a proposed Tenancy and Recovery of Premises Bill before the Lagos State House of Assembly seeks to address arbitrary rent increases, illegal charges and disputes between landlords and tenants.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, said rapid population growth continued to put pressure on housing, land and infrastructure in the state.

He called for stronger collaboration among the government, property developers, financial institutions and residents to promote orderly urban growth and sustainable development.
