Super Falcons target quarter-final spot against Egypt
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be aiming to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations when they face Egypt in their final Group C match on Wednesday.
The defending champions have put their shock opening 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi behind them and are now fully focused on advancing to the knockout stage, with their sights set on retaining the continental title and qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Falcons revived their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia in their second group match, a result that restored confidence and left them well placed to reach the last eight with another positive performance against Egypt.
Despite Egypt’s difficult start to the tournament, including a 6-0 defeat to Zambia and a 3-1 loss to group leaders Malawi, the Nigerian team is wary of underestimating the North Africans, knowing that past results offer no guarantees in football.
Head coach Justin Madugu faces selection challenges, with defender Tosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini unavailable due to suspension. Demehin was sent off during the victory over Zambia after bringing down Barbra Banda, while Echegini is suspended after accumulating two yellow cards in Nigeria’s opening two matches.
Madugu is expected to make further adjustments to his starting line-up. Christy Ucheibe, who impressed in central defence after Demehin’s dismissal against Zambia, is likely to partner veteran defender Osinachi Ohale. Toni Payne is also expected to feature in midfield alongside captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimatu Ayinde.
Ajibade converted a penalty while Uchenna Kanu scored in stoppage time during the defeat to Malawi, and Kanu could be rewarded with another start alongside Asisat Oshoala, whose goal against Zambia proved decisive in keeping Nigeria’s quarter-final hopes alive.
