Champions League: Como Thrash Lens 9-0 To Match Bayern’s Historic Record

Como produced a stunning away performance, scoring nine goals against a hapless Lens side to equal the record for the most goals scored by a team in a single Champions League match.
The Italian side matched Bayern Munich’s tally against Dinamo Zagreb in 2024, as Cesc Fabregas’ team continued their remarkable debut European campaign in France.
Having thrashed RB Leipzig and Manchester United either side of a narrow defeat by Feyenoord, Como’s latest emphatic victory lifted them to fourth in the league-phase table.
“What they are doing is so impressive, considering this is their first time in Europe. In fact, I remember when they first got promoted and there was so much social media coverage of Fabregas really loving it, and they were fighting for their lives in a relegation dogfight. Two seasons later and probably, along with PSG and Barcelona, they are the three most exciting teams in the Champions League”, former Manchester City player Nedum Onuoha told BBC Sport.
Although Como share the record for the most goals scored in a single match in the Champions League era, Feyenoord hold the European Cup record after defeating Icelandic side KR 12-2 in September 1969.
However, Como’s victory is the biggest away win in Champions League history.
They are also only the third team since the competition’s inception to win by an eight-goal margin, joining Liverpool and Real Madrid, who recorded 8-0 home victories over Besiktas and Malmo, respectively.
Furthermore, Como are the first team to score nine goals in an away European Cup match since Feyenoord’s 9-0 victory over Olympiakos Nicosia in September 1971.
No team has scored more than Como’s 19 goals in its first four matches in European competition. Only Queen’s Park Rangers, during the 1976-77 UEFA Cup campaign, have matched that impressive tally.
