Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, produced a commanding performance on Sunday, thrashing Rwanda 106-62 to complete a perfect qualifying window and book a place in the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers.
The emphatic victory completed an outstanding three-game sweep for Nigeria, who finished the window unbeaten after earlier victories over Tunisia and Guinea. The flawless run marks a major resurgence for the team under head coach David Fizdale.
Point guard Uche (U.C.) Iroegbu led the charge with 17 points and seven assists, while Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu and Stan Okoye each contributed 13 points as D’Tigers combined attacking efficiency with defensive discipline in a one-sided contest. Nigeria seized control from the opening quarter and never looked back, recording one of the team’s most dominant victories in recent years.
The result capped a remarkable turnaround for a side that entered the qualifying window under pressure to revive its hopes of reaching the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
D’Tigers began the campaign with a hard-fought 84-81 victory over Tunisia, with Chimezie Metu and Ike Iroegbu scoring 17 points each. Wes Iwundu added 14 points, while Uche Iroegbu chipped in with 13 in a fiercely contested encounter.
Nigeria followed that success with a dramatic 80-79 comeback win over Guinea. Caleb Agada starred with 22 points, Uche Iroegbu added 14, and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu contributed 10 as D’Tigers erased a late deficit to claim a second straight victory.
The comprehensive win over Rwanda completed a clean sweep of the qualifying window, highlighting the team’s resilience, improved chemistry and consistency. Under Fizdale’s guidance, experienced campaigners and emerging talents combined effectively to deliver disciplined performances at both ends of the court.
With three successive victories, D’Tigers have significantly strengthened their bid to qualify for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Having successfully navigated the opening phase, Nigeria will now shift focus to the second round of the African qualifiers, where stiffer opposition awaits in the race for a place at the global showpiece.
