Strong indications have emerged that FIFA is considering expanding the 2030 FIFA World Cup to 64 teams as part of the tournament’s centenary celebrations.
The proposal gained momentum after comments by a top FIFA official and growing support from some continental football bodies.
CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez publicly backed the idea in a post on X, suggesting that the 2030 edition should feature a record 64 participating nations.
“The next one will be played at home,” Domínguez wrote, referring to the 2030 World Cup. “It will be a great opportunity for football to celebrate the centenary of the tournament with a competition in which 64 teams participate.”
The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, while several opening matches will be staged in South America to mark 100 years since the inaugural tournament was held in Uruguay in 1930.
South American football authorities are pushing for an expanded competition, arguing that a larger tournament would allow the region to host more matches during the historic centenary edition.
Although FIFA has yet to make a formal announcement, Domínguez’s comments have fuelled speculation that the world football governing body is seriously considering the proposal.
