Tunisia have sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi following the team’s humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F match of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday night.
Lamouchi’s side were outclassed by the Swedes in Monterrey, conceding four second-half goals as they suffered a crushing loss to begin their campaign on a disappointing note.
The heavy defeat proved to be the final blow for the former Ivory Coast international, who was appointed in January. His position had already come under pressure after Tunisia suffered a 5-0 loss to Belgium in a pre-World Cup friendly ahead of the tournament being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Confirming the decision, the Tunisian Football Federation announced Lamouchi’s dismissal in a statement posted on Instagram.
“An agreement has been officially reached to dismiss coach Sabri Lamouchi,” the federation said. “Plans are under way to appoint Mondher Kebaier as the national team coach on an interim basis.”
Kebaier previously managed Tunisia between August 2019 and January 2022 and is expected to take charge of the team’s next World Cup fixture against Japan on Saturday.
Tunisia will now hope a change in leadership can revive their campaign and improve their chances of progressing from the group stage.
