The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday commenced a two-day induction programme for newly recruited officers of the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission (LAHASCOM) and the Lagos State House of Assembly as part of efforts to promote excellence, professionalism and diligence in public service.
The programme, held at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium within the Assembly complex, brought together 132 newly employed officers, comprising both male and female staff from diverse educational backgrounds.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Clerk of the House, Barrister Olalekan Onafeko, who represented the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. (Hon) Mudashiru Obasa, urged the officers to demonstrate productivity, proactiveness and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, noting that the Assembly places a high premium on excellence and accountability in service delivery.
Onafeko also provided an overview of the historical development of the Lagos State House of Assembly since its establishment in 1979. He highlighted the Assembly’s constitutional mandate to make laws, perform oversight functions and represent the interests and aspirations of the people of Lagos State.
Delivering the keynote address, the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission, Alhaja Omowunmi Ogbara, charged the newly recruited officers to adhere strictly to the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and uphold the highest standards of discipline, productivity and ethical conduct in their respective directorates.
She also called for a minute’s silence in honour of two members of staff who recently passed away, describing their deaths as a painful loss to the Assembly family and praying for the repose of their souls.
One of the facilitators, Mr. Femi Solaja, a retired civil servant, took participants through the Public Service Rules and Regulations applicable to public officers.
He stressed the importance of honesty, integrity, loyalty and professionalism, noting that public servants must avoid corruption, misconduct and any actions capable of bringing the service into disrepute.
Solaja further emphasized the need for punctuality, regular attendance and diligent performance of assigned duties.
He reminded participants of the importance of complying with lawful instructions and maintaining confidentiality regarding official information obtained in the course of duty.
According to him, officers are expected to demonstrate dedication, initiative, innovation and teamwork while carrying out their responsibilities.
He added that although public servants are entitled to welfare packages and leave benefits, they must equally uphold discipline, loyalty and integrity throughout their careers.
