Debutants Cape Verde pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup so far, holding Spain to a goalless draw in their opening Group H match in Atlanta.
Coming into the tournament as one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the World Cup, Cape Verde were widely regarded as underdogs against the reigning European champions. Ranked 67th in the latest FIFA rankings, they faced a Spanish side ranked second in the world.
Despite Spain dominating possession for much of the contest, Cape Verde displayed remarkable discipline and resilience to frustrate their more fancied opponents throughout the encounter.
A key figure in the historic result was veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who produced a series of outstanding saves to deny Spain. The 40-year-old shot-stopper stood firm whenever the Spaniards threatened to break the deadlock.
Spain struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the first half, with Ferran Torres squandering their best chance. The forward connected with a header from Marc Cucurella across the six-yard box but rattled the crossbar under pressure from Vozinha.
In search of inspiration, Spain introduced teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the second half. The Barcelona winger, making his first appearance in nearly eight weeks after recovering from a hamstring injury, added energy and creativity to the attack but was unable to find a decisive breakthrough on his World Cup debut.
As the match entered its closing stages, Spain continued to push for a winner. Mikel Oyarzabal, remembered for scoring the winning goal in the Euro 2024 final against England, came close but was denied by a superb block from Cape Verde defender Roberto Lopes.
Cape Verde nearly completed an even greater upset when Diney Borges headed a late corner towards goal. However, Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón made a routine save, ensuring the match ended in a stalemate and allowing Cape Verde to celebrate a memorable point in their first-ever World Cup appearance.
