The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Poland after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in an entertaining international friendly. Despite taking the lead twice, Eric Chelle’s side were unable to hold on for victory as the hosts fought back to earn a share of the spoils.
Both teams began the match brightly, looking to assert control in midfield and create early openings. Poland’s Bartosz Slisz became the first player booked in the 21st minute as the contest grew increasingly competitive.
Nigeria opened the scoring two minutes later through Terem Moffi. The striker calmly finished off a well-worked move after being set up by Moses Simon, giving the Super Eagles a deserved 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
The advantage, however, lasted only until first-half stoppage time. Poland restored parity in the first minute of added time when Kacper Potulski converted a chance created by Nicola Zalewski to send both sides into the break level at 1-1.
At the start of the second half, Chelle made several substitutions as he sought to evaluate his squad and maintain the team’s tempo. Calvin Bassey, Paul Onuachu, Raphael Onyedika, Bruno Onyemaechi, Philip Otele, Semi Ajayi and Rafiu Durosinmi were all introduced.
The changes gave Nigeria renewed energy and greater control in key areas of the pitch. Their improved display was rewarded in the 77th minute when the Super Eagles won a penalty after sustained pressure on the Polish defence.
Paul Onuachu stepped up and confidently converted from the spot to restore Nigeria’s lead. The goal marked another positive contribution from the striker as he continues to stake a claim for a regular place in the national team.
Just when Nigeria appeared set for victory, Poland struck deep into stoppage time. In the fifth minute of added time, Pawel Wisniewski finished from a Norbert Wojtuszek assist to secure a 2-2 draw and deny the Super Eagles a hard-earned win.
