The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has dismissed allegations of a plot to impose candidates ahead of the forthcoming legislative elections, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Lagos APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, condemned the publication, which he said was based on claims by a faceless group of “concerned and vigilant members,” insisting that the report was a fabrication aimed at creating unnecessary tension within the party.
Ojelabi stated that there was no plan, secret meeting, or predetermined list of candidates as alleged, stressing that the claims were designed to give a false impression of internal crisis in the party.
He accused certain individuals of resorting to propaganda and media sensationalism after failing to advance their ambitions through legitimate party channels, adding that such tactics would not intimidate the leadership or disrupt the party’s democratic processes.
The APC chairman further disclosed that the party had alerted security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other stakeholders to the activities of what he described as political mischief-makers attempting to destabilise the polity through misinformation.
According to him, the actions of these elements are aimed at creating distrust and undermining public confidence in the party’s internal processes, as well as generating unnecessary political anxiety.
Reaffirming the party’s position, Ojelabi said the Lagos APC would strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act, the party’s constitution, and guidelines set by its national leadership in the selection of candidates.
He added that while consensus remains an option, the party would adopt direct primaries in situations where agreement cannot be reached, stressing that the commitment to due process and internal democracy remains firm and non-negotiable.
