Italy’s World Cup drought continued after they suffered a 4–1 penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in their playoff final on Tuesday, following a 1–1 draw in regulation time.
The four-time champions, who also missed the last two editions of the tournament at the playoff stage, have now failed again to secure qualification, with their last appearance dating back to 2014—coincidentally the same year Bosnia made their only previous World Cup outing.
Italy made a bright start to the match, taking the lead in the 15th minute through Moise Kean. However, their momentum was disrupted when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off four minutes before halftime, handing the hosts a crucial advantage.
Bosnia capitalised late in the game, equalising 11 minutes from time through Haris Tabakovic to force the contest into penalties.
In the shootout, Italy faltered as Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante both missed from the spot, while Bosnia converted all their kicks to seal a 4–1 victory.
The result sees Bosnia and Herzegovina book their place at the World Cup, repeating their semi-final shootout success over Wales to complete a dramatic playoff run.
