Ecuador’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a setback after they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Curacao in Kansas City.
The Caribbean minnows produced a resilient defensive display to earn a historic point, with goalkeeper Eloy Room delivering an outstanding performance to deny the South American side throughout the match.
Room was the standout performer, making a series of crucial saves as Curacao secured their first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup. The veteran goalkeeper repeatedly frustrated Ecuador’s attackers with a string of impressive stops.
Ecuador dominated possession and created the better chances from the opening whistle. Captain Enner Valencia tested Room inside the first three minutes, while John Yeboah and Pedro Vite also came close as the South Americans pressed for an early breakthrough.
Despite Ecuador’s attacking intent, Curacao’s defence remained organised and disciplined. By halftime, Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez had been largely untroubled as play was concentrated in Curacao’s half.
The pattern continued after the break, with Moises Caicedo and Gonzalo Plata leading Ecuador’s search for a goal. However, Room continued to stand firm, while Curacao threatened occasionally on the counterattack through Leandro Bacuna.
Ecuador nearly snatched victory late in the contest when Angelo Preciado’s effort struck the crossbar, but Curacao held on to complete a memorable defensive performance and secure a valuable point.
The result leaves Ecuador without a win in four matches and facing a crucial final Group-stage encounter against Germany as they seek to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
