ECOWAS Condemns Attempted Military Takeover In Benin

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned an alleged attempt to overthrow the government of the Republic of Benin.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the ECOWAS Commission said it received “with consternation” reports of an attempted military takeover in the country.

The regional bloc described the development as an unconstitutional act and a subversion of the will of the Beninese people.

It called for full respect for the country’s constitution and commended the Benin Government and the Republican Army for swiftly bringing the situation under control.

ECOWAS warned that the leaders of the plot would be held individually and collectively responsible for any loss of lives or property resulting from their actions.

The commission also reaffirmed its readiness to support Benin “in all forms necessary”, including the possible deployment of the regional standby force, to defend the nation’s constitution and territorial integrity.
