Africa is set for a landmark moment in athletics after Nairobi was selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.
The decision, announced in Budapest on Tuesday, means Africa will host the sport’s biggest global championship for the first time.
Kenya’s rich athletics tradition and experience in staging major international events helped strengthen Nairobi’s successful bid.
The renovated Kasarani Stadium will serve as the centrepiece of the championships.
Munich, Germany, was meanwhile awarded the 2031 edition, taking the event back to Germany 22 years after Berlin hosted the 2009 championships.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said Nairobi had demonstrated that “this is their moment,” while highlighting Kenya’s long-standing influence on the sport.
The championships will next be held in Beijing in 2027 before the global athletics showpiece moves to Nairobi in 2029.
