Dowman Stars As Arsenal Cruise Past Ipswich

Max Dowman scored twice as Arsenal cruised past Ipswich Town to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round.

The 16-year-old was one of two youngsters making their first starts of the season, alongside 17-year-old centre-back Marli Salmon.

Dowman opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a fine solo effort, winning possession in midfield before exchanging passes with Eberechi Eze and racing forward. He left two defenders on the ground before calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Noni Madueke doubled Arsenal’s lead with a powerful finish after Mikel Merino flicked the ball over the top.

Dowman added his second after the break, controlling Martin Zubimendi’s pass before rolling it into the far bottom corner. Merino then made it 4-0, his effort going in off the inside of the post.

Ipswich responded through Anis Mehmeti, who finished from Jack Clarke’s pass, and Chuba Akpom, who turned neatly before finding the net. The goals came too late to threaten Arsenal’s progress.

Both sides fielded heavily rotated line-ups, making a combined 19 changes from their respective Premier League matches at the weekend.

Arsenal, who have won every game this season, will discover their fourth-round opponents on Wednesday, with the draw taking place after Manchester United’s tie against Brighton.
