Yakubu Mohammed: Family Donates Memoir ‘Beyond Expectations’ To PAAU As Faculty Dean Honours Late Journalist
The family of the late veteran journalist and co-founder of the defunct Newswatch magazine, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, on Monday donated copies of his memoir, Beyond Expectations, to the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Ayingba, Kogi State.
Mohammed passed away in January 2026 at the age of 75 and is widely celebrated for his contributions to nation-building and press freedom.
The books were presented to the faculty on Monday by Yusuf Mohammed, one of the deceased’ssons, on behalf of the family and were received by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Chris Attah.
Speaking during the presentation, Attah described Yakubu Mohammed as a distinguished journalist who was known for diligence, truthfulness and empathy.
“Yakubu Mohammed was a great journalist. I remember him for his diligence. I remember him for standing for the truth and also for his empathy when it mattered,” he said.
Attah recalled meeting the late journalist at Newswatch shortly before he secured employment with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
“I knew him at Newswatch shortly before I got a job with NTA. He was really enthusiastic about me working there. He was always asking about me and wanted to work with them,” he recalled.
The don described Mohammed as a man who deeply cared about his people, adding that he admired his willingness to stand up for them and show empathy when it mattered.
“He was someone who loved his people. I appreciate him for standing for his people and being empathic as well,” Attah said.
The donation is expected to make the memoir available to students and researchers in communication and media studies while preserving the legacy and professional contributions of one of Nigeria’s respected journalists.
