Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday said his administration is shifting from projects to building lasting healthcare institutions that ensure quality, accessible and affordable care.
Speaking at the 2nd Eko Health Convention in Lekki, Sanwo-Olu unveiled reforms in health insurance, digital health, infrastructure and workforce development.
The theme, “Building a Healthier Lagos: Connecting Access with Excellence,” reflects the need for both access and quality, he said, pledging universal healthcare access regardless of income or location.
Sanwo-Olu said mandatory health insurance is key to Universal Health Coverage, noting he signed the NHIA domestication law in July 2024.
On infrastructure, he said healthcare has been decentralised into six Health Districts, improving access and reducing waiting times. Ongoing projects include Maternal and Child Centres, mobile outreach, climate-smart PHCs, Massey Children’s Hospital, the Mental Health Institute, and new general hospitals.
He added that the Smart Health Information Platform will integrate medical records across facilities, using AI and data analytics to improve diagnosis, surveillance and response.
On workforce, he announced improved welfare, new recruitment, and a University of Medicine and Health Sciences to train more professionals.
He called for stronger private sector partnerships, noting public funding alone is insufficient for a megacity, and urged preventive care, insurance enrolment and early treatment.
Earlier, Deputy Governor Hamzat said Lagos has moved from reactive to proactive, institution-driven healthcare under the THEMES Agenda, citing hospital upgrades, insurance expansion and decentralisation that improved accountability and maternal care.
