Samuel Ogazi Wins 400m Gold as Nigeria Adds Athletics Bronze
Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi produced a sensational performance to win the men’s 400 metres gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, storming to victory in a blistering 44.25 seconds.
The 20-year-old delivered a dominant display in Saturday’s final, pulling away from the field to secure Team Nigeria’s latest athletics gold medal and further establish himself as one of the world’s brightest one-lap prospects.
Ogazi finished comfortably ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards, who claimed silver in 44.82 seconds, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene settled for bronze in 45.21 seconds.
Nigeria also had another finalist in Edidiong Okon Udo, who finished eighth in 45.81 seconds after competing in a high-quality field. Botswana’s Lee Bhekempilo Eppie placed fourth in 45.31 seconds, Australia’s Thomas Reynolds was fifth in 45.57 seconds, Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga finished sixth in 45.61 seconds, and Jamaica’s Zandrion Barnes came seventh in 45.68 seconds.
Ogazi’s emphatic triumph added another gold medal to Team Nigeria’s growing tally in Glasgow and strengthened the country’s impressive athletics campaign at the Games. His winning time of 44.25 seconds was more than half a second faster than the runner-up, underscoring his dominance in the final.
Meanwhile, Team Nigeria celebrated another podium finish as Ella Onojuvwevwo claimed bronze in the women’s 400 metres final at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday.
The Nigerian quarter-miler ran a determined race to finish third in a season’s best time of 51.00 seconds, boosting Nigeria’s medal haul in athletics.
Jamaica’s Oakley won the gold medal in 50.21 seconds, while Barbados’ Williams took silver in 50.99 seconds, finishing just one-hundredth of a second ahead of Onojuvwevwo in a thrilling race for the podium.
Ogazi’s gold and Onojuvwevwo’s bronze capped another memorable day for Team Nigeria in Glasgow, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation as one of the leading athletics nations at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
