Team Nigeria continued its impressive campaign on Day 8 of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, making history in the inaugural Mixed 4x400m Relay and securing another field event final as the country’s athletes maintained their push for more medals.
Nigeria’s Mixed 4x400m relay team of Edidiong Udo, Esther Joseph, Samuel Ogazi and Patience Okon-George delivered a record-breaking performance, winning their heat in 3:14.58 to set the first-ever Commonwealth Games record in the event.
The Nigerian quartet finished comfortably ahead of Australia, who came second in 3:15.21, to qualify for the final as the fastest team and strengthen their status as favourites for the gold medal.
The outstanding display also ensured the four athletes became the first Commonwealth Games record holders in the Mixed 4x400m Relay, marking a historic milestone for Team Nigeria.
In the field events, Ruth Usoro booked her place in the women’s long jump final with a superb season’s best leap of 6.77m (+0.6) on her first attempt, comfortably exceeding the automatic qualifying mark of 6.70m.
Nigeria also remained in contention in the men’s decathlon, with Jami Schlueter sitting fourth after six events on 5,099 points. He will conclude his campaign during the evening session with the javelin throw and the 1,500m, where a strong finish could lift him into the medal positions.
Attention now turns to an action-packed evening session, with several Nigerians in medal contention. Ezekiel Nathaniel will compete in the men’s 400m hurdles final, Chinecherem Nnamdi will feature in the men’s javelin final, while sprint star Udodi Onwuzurike will line up in the men’s 200m final.
With a Commonwealth Games record already secured and several medal opportunities still ahead, Team Nigeria heads into the Day 8 evening session full of confidence and momentum as it seeks to add to its growing medal haul in Glasgow.
