The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Safety Commission, has held a stakeholders’ forum to promote a stronger safety culture among facility managers and safety professionals.
The initiative aims to deepen collaboration and reinforce best practices to prevent avoidable fatalities, especially in high-rise buildings.
Speaking at the forum themed “Safe Building, Protected Workforce,“ the Director-General of the Lagos Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, said safety and facility management must be integrated into building design from the outset.
He noted that buildings require continuous monitoring through maintenance, inspections, and emergency preparedness, stressing that safety must never be an afterthought.
“Safety is the core operational framework that protects lives and assets,” Mojola said, adding that facility managers should be trained and certified in safety practices.
He explained that a protected workforce includes all on-site workers, from cleaners to contractors, who must be safeguarded from avoidable risks.
Delivering the keynote address, the Technical Adviser to the Commission, Mr. Seun Awojobi, said the forum provides a platform for practical solutions to improve construction safety and occupational health in Lagos.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to regular inspections, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and strict enforcement of safety regulations.
Guest speaker Mr. Lekan Akinwumi emphasized collaboration between facility managers and safety professionals to ensure safer workplaces.
In goodwill messages, leaders of ISPON, AFMPN, and IFMA stressed the importance of collaboration, ethical standards, and strict regulatory compliance.
Other presentations focused on high-rise safety management, emergency preparedness, and disaster prevention in the built environment.
