CAS Sets October Hearing For Senegal’s Afcon Title Appeal
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has scheduled a hearing for 8 October to consider Senegal’s appeal against the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to strip the country of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title and award it to Morocco.
Senegal had defeated hosts Morocco 1-0 in the Afcon final on 18 January 2025 in Rabat, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal in extra time. However, the match was overshadowed by controversy after Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a penalty awarded to Morocco during normal time while the score remained goalless.
The disruption was further compounded when some Senegalese supporters attempted to invade the pitch, leading to a delay of nearly 20 minutes before play resumed.
In March 2026, CAF overturned the match result, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the final and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory, thereby declaring the hosts African champions.
In a statement issued on Friday, CAS confirmed that the appeal lodged by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) against CAF and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) will be heard at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
According to CAS, the appeal, which was registered on 25 March 2026, seeks to overturn CAF’s ruling and have Senegal officially recognised as the winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The hearing will be conducted behind closed doors. CAS also clarified that no final ruling will be delivered on the day of the hearing, adding that the date for its decision will be announced at a later time.
