Shortly after Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Nigeria’s Super Eagles posted a brief but symbolic message on their official X account.
“Congratulations to Spain on winning the 2026 #FIFAWorldCup. See you in 2030”, said Super Eagles.
While congratulating the new world champions, the message also reflected Nigeria’s determination to end their absence from football’s biggest tournament after missing the last two World Cups.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, featured an expanded 48-team format, with Africa allocated nine automatic qualification spots and one intercontinental playoff place.
Despite the increased number of qualification slots and a squad filled with players featuring in Europe’s top leagues, the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the tournament for the second successive edition.
Nigeria’s qualification campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion after a 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo in the playoff in Rabat, Morocco. The Super Eagles lost 4-3 on penalties, extending their World Cup absence to eight years after also missing the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
The Super Eagles’ post has resonated with many supporters, who view it as a statement of intent and a promise to return to the global stage. The centenary 2030 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, while commemorative opening matches will be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
For head coach Eric Chelle and his players, attention now turns to building a squad capable of ending Nigeria’s World Cup exile. With qualification expected to begin in the coming years, the three-time African champions will be aiming to fulfil their public pledge and secure a place at the historic tournament, restoring belief among supporters and re-establishing Nigeria as a force in world football.
