Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been drawn to face either Sudan or Comoros in the African qualifying series for the women’s football event of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The draw, conducted on Wednesday by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) at its headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, sets the stage for the continent’s race to secure slots at the global tournament.
Nigeria, 10-time African champions, received a bye into the second round and will take on the winner of the first-round clash between Sudan and Comoros. The fixtures are scheduled to hold over two legs on the weekends of October 5 and 13, 2026.
Should the Super Falcons progress, they are likely to face a sterner challenge in the third round, where either Congo or Morocco awaits. Those matches are billed for the weekends of February 23 and March 6, 2027.
Elsewhere, several intriguing fixtures emerged from the draw. Tunisia will battle Senegal in a high-profile second-round tie, while DR Congo is set to confront Côte d’Ivoire. Another all-West African clash will see Mali take on Benin Republic.
A total of 35 countries are participating in the qualifying campaign. They include Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The qualification series will be played across five rounds, with only two teams earning Africa’s tickets to the women’s football tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, scheduled for July 11 to 29.
