Arsenal reclaimed top spot in the Premier League as Eberechi Eze’s first-half strike secured a hard-fought victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side had briefly slipped to second place for the first time since October following Manchester City’s midweek win over Burnley, which put the champions ahead on goal difference.
The Gunners made a strong start and took the lead in the ninth minute through Eze, who finished off a well-worked short corner routine. The England international received a pass from Kai Havertz on the edge of the box and curled a superb effort into the top corner.
Newcastle threatened in the first half, with William Osula, Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali all creating chances, but they were unable to find an equaliser before the break.
Eddie Howe introduced Yoane Wissa and Harvey Barnes in the second half as the visitors pushed for a response. Wissa came closest late on but squandered a golden opportunity to level the score.
The result marks Newcastle’s fourth consecutive league defeat, while Arsenal move three points clear at the summit, albeit having played a game more than title rivals Manchester City.
However, the victory was tempered by injury concerns for the hosts, with both Havertz and goalscorer Eze forced off during the match.
