2027: Opposition Parties Unite Against One-Party State, To Field Single Candidate
Opposition political parties in Nigeria have resolved to resist any attempt to impose a one-party system, warning that such a move could undermine the country’s democratic framework.
The resolution was part of a communiqué issued at the end of a national summit held on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State, where party leaders deliberated on what they described as pressing challenges facing the country.
The parties said they would actively participate in the 2027 general elections, including fielding candidates for the presidential race, despite what they termed as efforts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to dominate the political space.
They also agreed to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election, with the aim of consolidating opposition strength and offering a viable alternative to the ruling party.
In addition, the parties called for the immediate review of the Electoral Act, 2026, urging the National Assembly to remove provisions they believe could compromise the credibility of elections.
The summit further expressed concerns over the conduct of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, alleging bias and calling for his removal from overseeing the 2027 elections.
The opposition parties also demanded the release of politicians allegedly detained on bailable offences and called for an extension of deadlines for party primaries, arguing that recent electoral guidelines posed challenges to their preparations.
They commended Nigerians for their resilience and expressed appreciation to the Oyo State Government for hosting the summit, describing the gathering as a critical step towards safeguarding the country’s democratic future.
