ADC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plan To Install Nafiu Bala As National Chairman
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged a plot by influential figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into recognising an expelled member, Nafiu Bala, as the party’s National Chairman.
In a statement issued on Monday, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the alleged move as a “desperate and sinister plot” aimed at destabilising the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abdullahi claimed the alleged scheme was being driven by a governor of the APC in collaboration with a senior security official in Abuja, with the aim of weakening opposition forces and clearing the path for Bola Ahmed Tinubu to emerge as the sole presidential contender in the 2027 polls.
According to him, Bala, who is also known as Nafiu Bala Gombe, was expelled from the ADC after actions the party said were inconsistent with its constitution and leadership decisions.
The ADC spokesperson said Bala had recently been parading himself as a leader of the party while allegedly collaborating with external political interests to undermine the party’s structure.
Abdullahi maintained that the party’s leadership had already been legally settled, noting that a joint meeting of the National Working Committee and National Executive Committee transferred leadership to a coalition led by David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola in July 2025 in a process witnessed by INEC officials.
He added that INEC formally recognised the Mark-led leadership in September 2025, while a Federal High Court on March 6 dismissed a suit challenging the arrangement, affirming that party leadership issues are internal matters.
The ADC therefore urged the public, party members and democratic institutions to disregard the claims and activities of Bala and those allegedly backing him, insisting that the party remained united and committed to building a credible democratic alternative for Nigerians ahead of the next general election.
