Health Writers Mourn Veteran Journalist, Matthew Ukachunwa

The Health Writers Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of one of its most dedicated members, Mr. Matthew Ukachunwa of New Nigerian Newspapers Ltd.

Ukachunwa died in the early hours of Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, leaving a significant void in Nigeria’s media landscape and within the health reporting community.

In a statement co-signed by HEWAN President, Vivian Ihechu, and Secretary, Temitope Obayendo, the association described Ukachunwa as a pioneer member and “a consummate professional and a pillar of the association.”

Known for his soft-spoken demeanour, Ukachunwa was firm in his convictions and possessed an unrivalled mastery of his craft. He was a meticulous reporter who approached every assignment with remarkable attention to detail, inspiring younger colleagues in the profession.

“Matthew Ukachunwa was the definition of a stickler for time. His commitment to punctuality and professional ethics was legendary. He was a man who truly understood his work and delivered it with quiet excellence,” the statement read.

The HEWAN President added that Ukachunwa consistently supported the association through his active participation and constructive counsel.

“He was never absent from any of the association’s engagements. Beyond that, he was always prompt,” Ihechu said.

The association noted that his passing was particularly emotional given his vibrant presence just days earlier, saying “Only last Friday, Feb. 13, 2026, at a capacity-building workshop organised by the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) for health writers, Ukachunwa’s characteristic discipline was on display. He received the “Early Bird” cash prize as one of the first participants to arrive at the event — a final testament to his lifelong dedication and respect for the profession”.
