Sanwo-Olu, Olu of Warri Urge Young Creatives to Harness Storytelling for Nation-Building
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, Oba Tsola Emiko on Tuesday advised young creatives on the power of storytelling as a tool for nation-building.
The call was made at the Storytellers’ Conference held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts, Iganmu, Lagos, where young influencers, photographers, digital content creators and other creative enthusiasts gathered to explore the role of storytelling in shaping Nigeria’s future and driving positive social change.
The conference brought together youths from across the creative ecosystem and focused on how storytelling can be leveraged for cultural preservation, civic engagement, innovation and national development.
Speaking during a question-and-answer session, Sanwo-Olu said storytelling plays a critical role in amplifying voices and creating opportunities for people with unique experiences and perspectives. He noted that powerful narratives can inspire change, build communities and influence policy and development.
The governor also shared his vision for Lagos State, expressing optimism that within the next ten years, the state would emerge as the best city to live and work in Africa—one that is inclusive, functional and rich with opportunities for all residents.
According to him, Lagos will continue to position itself as a hub where creativity, innovation and enterprise can thrive. “Storytelling activates voices. It gives people the opportunity to be seen, heard and valued, regardless of background,” Sanwo-Olu said, urging young creatives to use their platforms responsibly and for the greater good of society.
In his keynote address titled “Culture, Heritage and the Storyteller’s Responsibility,” the Olu of Warri described storytelling as one of the most powerful forces in the world. Quoting late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, the monarch said storytellers shape destiny and influence how societies think, act and evolve.
He stressed that storytellers carry the responsibility of preserving culture, projecting truth and inspiring progress, noting that narratives have the power to unite people, challenge injustice and redefine national identity. He encouraged young Nigerians to embrace their cultural heritage while telling authentic stories that reflect the realities, aspirations and values of society.
Organisers said the Storytellers’ Conference was designed to empower youths with unique stories, equipping them to deploy their creative skills for development, impact and social transformation, while positioning Nigeria’s creative industry as a catalyst for economic growth and cultural diplomacy.
