Speeding Bus Rams Truck in Lagos, Two Passengers Sustain Critical Injuries
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a serious road traffic collision that occurred in the early hours of Sunday along the Heritage Garden inward Oshodi–Oke corridor of Lagos, leaving two passengers critically injured.
The incident was disclosed in a press release issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of LASTMA, Mr Adebayo Taofiq.
According to preliminary findings, the crash involved a red Tata long commercial bus with registration number MUS 507 XX, which was allegedly driven at excessive speed. The bus reportedly rammed into a moving truck that fled the scene without sustaining visible damage, making immediate identification difficult.
LASTMA operatives stationed within the corridor were said to have responded promptly after receiving a distress alert. On arrival at the scene, the officers rescued two passengers who were trapped inside the wrecked bus and immediately activated emergency response procedures.
The Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) was contacted and responded swiftly, administering first aid at the scene before transporting the injured passengers to a medical facility for further treatment.
To restore traffic flow and prevent secondary accidents, LASTMA officers apprehended the driver of the commercial bus for investigation, while the damaged vehicle was promptly evacuated from the road.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and wished them a speedy recovery. He described the crash as regrettable but avoidable, attributing it to speeding.
Bakare-Oki warned motorists against reckless driving, stressing that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of road accidents and loss of lives. He urged both commercial and private drivers to observe speed limits and comply with traffic regulations, noting that road safety is a shared responsibility essential to protecting all road users in Lagos State.
