The ancient town of Idanre came alive on Tuesday night with music, colour and cultural pride as the Mare Festival returned after a nine-year hiatus, drawing thousands of residents and visitors to the grand finale of the 2025 edition.
For hours, Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, stood before an electrified crowd, soaking in the energy of a people joyfully reunited with a festival many had feared was lost to history.
In his address, the governor described the revival of the Mare Festival as a powerful symbol of cultural rebirth, stressing that despite the pressures of globalisation, Ondo State must continue to preserve and celebrate its indigenous heritage. He noted that the state is richly endowed with diverse festivals that reflect its history, values and identity, adding that culture remains a strong unifying force.
Aiyedatiwa expressed delight at performances that blended tradition with modern expression, particularly by young artistes who fused rap and contemporary rhythms with the Idanre language, noting that the displays showed culture could evolve without losing its essence.
He said the festival provided a vital platform for youths to showcase their talents, expressing optimism that many were discovered during the four-day programme, which also featured a marathon and other activities aimed at promoting social well-being.
Commending the conduct of the crowd, the governor praised the older youths for protecting rather than intimidating younger attendees, describing the atmosphere as orderly and exemplary. Impressed by the turnout and discipline, he promised a bigger and more colourful Mare Festival next year.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Adesoji Afolabi, said the festival’s return demonstrated the governor’s commitment to cultural revival, grassroots development and tourism-driven economic growth. He disclosed that the administration had approved the revival of four major festivals, including the Mare Festival, Ilaje Boat Regatta, Igogo Festival and Akoko Unity Carnival.
The commissioner appreciated the Idanre community, organisers and indigenes at home and in the diaspora for their support, declaring that the Mare Festival had come to stay. The celebration peaked with an electrifying performance by star artiste Teniola Apata, popularly known as Teni Makanaki, which sent waves of excitement through the crowd.
